Yes, G-Phoria 2008 has come and gone, and Dancube Network has the results,
along with my opinions on each win.
Favorite System - Xbox 360
The 360 is a good system, but the Wii has sold more and doesn't that make it more popular? However they said that the Wii revolutionized gaming, and everyone must own two DS Lites by now.
Best Sports Game - Skate Obvious, other nomiations were bad, half of them were those little cartoon characters doing stuff.
Best New Character - Niko Bellic He's an awesome character, but the Companion Cube wasn't even nominated, I know it would have won, however GLaDOS was nominated. No love for the Weighted Companion Cube.
Best Strategy Game - Civilization Revolutionized All nominations were bad. No good stategy games this year I guess.
Best Shooter - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Even though Halo is a great shooter, Call of Duty is the most realistic as to real world combat. I wish they had put vehicles in this time...
Best Soundtrack - Rock Band Not really fair, seeing as it's a game that only lets you play music. Adam Sessler said the songs were popular independent, without the need for Rock Band showing them, mood enhancing soundtrack is more what we need. I agree, soundtracks are more of backdrop stuff, not something you jam to.
Best RPG - Mass Effect I don't play RPGs, so I can't really comment. The screens they showed though looked cool.
Best Handheld Game - God of War: Chains of Olympus Don't play handhelds as much as I used to, but compared to the other nominees, this one had the best graphics, and the gameplay they showed look cool.
Best Game Party - Rock Band Horrible choice, we all know that Brawl should have won. You can't just sit down and play Rock Band, you'll suck at it. Atleast with Brawl you can have fun even having never played it.
Most Original Game - Portal No surprise, with the ability to put a portal anywhere you want (With some restrictions), how can this not be original? Plus, the idea for the Companion Cube to become your friend is very creative.
Best Racing Game - Mario Kart Wii It's a cool game and all, but best? The items and everything are awesome, but it's not really realistic driving. Maybe it's just the fun factor that other racing games are missing that made it win.
Best Multiplayer Online - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare It's the Halo-hate. Halo's a great game, and an even better online. Call of Duty doesn't really bring anything to the table when it comes to online, it's just playing with other people. With Halo 3 online, you can use Forge to make maps with 15 other people, Call of Duty doesn't have anything special like that to do online. Plus, Grifball, need I say more?
Best Graphics - Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Makes sense, amazing graphics, no complaints.
Best Voice Acting - Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Once again, makes sense, amazing voice acting.
Longest Lasting Game - Grand Theft Auto IV I'm not complaining, GTA is a game you can play over and over (to a limit), stealing cars, shooting people, and more. Halo 3 would probably tie it, with Forge, you never run out of stuff to do.
Best Action Game - Grand Theft Auto IV It's full of action, like I said, stealing cars, shooting people, what more action can you get.
Best Downloadable Content - Rock Band I will have to disagree, they're songs. Halo 3 may only release a new map pack every 4 months, but you can download virtually anything that people make on Bungie.net, thanks to the Fileshare option. If I make a cool map, I click a button, and anyone can now download it on the website with another click of a button. Now multiply that by the tens of thousands of people that are playing Halo 3 at any given time. That's real downloadable content.
Game Most Deserving Of An Uwe Boll Movie Adaptation - Turok I've never played it, but I hear it's crazy, just what Uwe needs.
Game of the Year - Halo 3
What can I say other than PWND! It beat Metal Gear Solid 4 by a meer 40 votes. Other nominees were GTA IV, Bioshock, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Call of Duty 4. I'm ecstatic that Halo 3 won, because of all of the people that say Halo 3 is overrated. When a game sells that many copies, and there are 200,000 people playing online at a time, it's a good game. Forge makes it so you have almost unlimited possibilities when making a map, if you don't like where weapons are, change it. If you want to move an object, move it. If you want to put random stuff all over the map, do it. This tool combined with Theater mode makes creating machinima much easier. You choose where you want stuff to go, you play a game, you film in in theater mode with any angle you want, and you're done. There's no more going to drop your weapon and trying to find a way to film a certain angle or make the camera do other tricks. Halo 3 has amazing graphics, even most of the stuff is fantasy. The weapon set is amazing, and Bungie really pulled out all the stops with coming up with new weapons. The Spartan Laser and the Gravity Hammer are unheard of in any other game. The Fileshare option is innovative, and allows you do download content from anyone in the world. Say a kid in South Korea makes a cool map, you, in America, UK, Canada, or where ever you're from, can download it with the click of a button. Besides map variants, the Fileshare also supports gametypes, videos, and pictures. And finally, Grifball. Enough said.
Why The Other Games Didn't Win
Super Smash Bros. Brawl was an awesome game, but there's only so much you can do with a 2D fighting game, even though the graphics are amazing for the Wii, and it sure as hell doesn't get old, it's limited. Metal Gear Solid 4 is an amazing addition to the series, but since it hasn't been ported to anything else, you have to buy a PS3 to play it, and no one is going to spend $400 to get a game. You could get 2 Wiis for that price. GTA IV is good as well, and should definetly be ported to the Wii, but stealing cars and shooting people gets old, even though as I said earlier, it can last you a long time. Bioshock is a good game, and creative as well, however, I've never personally played it, so I cannot give much feedback. And lastly, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. What can I say? Even though the games have advanced over the years, it's just not enough advancement to get me hooked. It's like the Madden games. Sure there are small things that make them better, but it's not enough to buy a new one everytime one comes out. So anyway, I believe Halo 3 deserved this award, after all of the work Bungie put into it.
G-Phoria Awards 2008 Wrap-up
All in all, I'm not too disappointed with the awards this year, other than a couple of upsets. It was a good year for gaming, so I can't wait to see what next year brings.
