I first played the original Kirby Superstar long after Crystal Shards. In fact, I've always regarded Superstar as somewhat worse than Kirby's Adventure (which tops my list of great NES games, fuck SMB3). Still, Kirby is my favorite game series after Legend of Zelda and Half-Life, so I've always treasured Superstar as one of the best SNES games. So when I first heard a Kirby game was coming out that WASN'T that stupid Canvas Curse thing (although I had fun with that), I was pretty ecstatic. Kirby has always managed to stay as a 2D platformer, save his brief dabble into 3D during Crystal Shard (a great but over rated game) and 2D is where he needs to stay. It fits him better, and he always manages to be fuzzier when you can only see one side (aka The Kirbster Paradox). You open the game with only a couple mini games available. Spring Breeze is Kirby's Adventure shortened and easy...ified, Dyna Blade is a new fun story mode, and Great Cave Offensive is "Collect Treasure, Eat everyone". As you beat various modes, you unlock others, with the classic METAKNIGHTMARE ULTRA! being my favourite. Even though I have yet to unlock two, maybe three modes, I'll go ahead and review each one I've got anyway. Spring Breeze A giant bird is "disrupting the crops." Even though I have never seen any kind of crop like food in Dreamland. All they ever eat is apples and stuff. Anyway, the only difference between these and Spring Breeze are a couple of bosses, the overview between levels, and Dyna the giant chicken. Again, too easy, but fun. 4/5 The Great Cave Offensive Gourmet Race Revenge of Meta Knight Milky Way Wishes Revenge of the King The Arena Meta Knightmare Ultra Overall, its a VERY satisfying game, and far outshines its predecessor with new material and epic gameplay. Its glued me to the stupid DS since Christmas, and I personally blame it for any drop in grades. 88% |
