It's not very often there's a new primary Mario game, but 2007 brings us the big one: Super Mario Galaxy. The game starts off with a brilliant opening movie, visually stunning, of Mario running through the Mushroom Kingdom. After about a 50 second cutscene you are left to control Mario. I won't take away the fun for you, but it really is brilliant. So after the rest of the CGI movies, you're left in SPACE! You're stranded on a small planet with two rabbits.

The story in most Super Mario games are just "Bowser has kidnapped the Princess". Well, Super Mario Galaxy is no exception! The cutscenes make it more of a story than ever before. As for controls, Galaxy has that nailed down perfectly. You use the Wiimote and Nunchuk configuration. A to jump, B to shoot star bits, Z to crouch, C to move the camera, and move with the control stick. It couldn't be simpler.

Not only is the gameplay brilliant, but the graphics are as well. I look back, at say Super Mario 64, and see the amazing progress the series' graphics have made. The graphics are definetly some of the best on the Wii, despite the cartoonish look. The graphics fall short to few games on the platform. Essentially only Metroid Prime 3 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Mario himself is brilliantly rendered. The detail in the textures is amazing, like nothing you've ever seen in any Mario game.

The planets you explore can be small, medium, or massive in size. Some people were afraid that the levels would be based around a load of small planets, but thankfully that's not the case. Infact, some of the levels are twice or even trice times bigger than those in Super Mario 64, or even Sunshine.

The game is somewhat easier than the previous games, but sometimes you'll really have to think about what you're going to do next or else it's Game Over for you. Well, actually you'll rarely see the Game Over screen as Princess Peach sends you 5 1-Ups every time you load up the game. However, how does she do that while in Bowser's grasp? Oh well.

As perfect as Super Mario Galaxy sounds, there are some downsides. It's a bit shorter than Super Mario 64, with 121 stars. The good thing is that you get a special prize at the end. I won't spoil it, but it's worth the time you spend trying to unlock it. Nintendo also said that this game would support full anti-aliasing, however none is present in the game. However, the game still looks amazing without it.

Boss battles are the hardest part of this game. Some will make you try and try again until you beat it, but you're having fun doing it. Finding out better ways to hurt the enemy is fun too. With the star bits you can stun some enemies, and with the spin attack you can send some enemy's attacks back at them. And yes, you fight Bowser more than once, just like in 64. Speaking of Bowser, his model in Galaxy is great. The detail is amazing, and has a much greater improvement over previous models.

Powerups have been improved in Super Mario Galaxy as well. Powerups such as fire, ice, and even bee have been introduced to create an unparalleled gaming experience.
